sorry, I copied that phrase from the manual
Hmm, the manual seems to be a bit outdated
> When an image is uploaded from the upload folder, it is copied into

that is the point: why is that?, why not using the images in the
upload folder right away? (reasonable img dimensions assumed)
because this is a temporary folder. The idea is to make this situation
possible : create a ftp account only for writers or restricted admins.
They mustn't have access to /IMG because in such a case they'd be able
to download / overwrite / erase any file..
> So you can empty the upload folder after this operation.
only, if I am sure, I will not use that image again somewhere else; I
can't access the /IMG/jpg or /IMG/gif folders from another article to
"reuse" a pic, I can access however all what is in the upload folder
No, it's possible to reuse a document anywhere.
As ex. you've uploaded somewhere an image, which gives you the
possibility to insert <IMG123> in your content. this tag can be
inserted in any other content.
That's different with portfolios because here you only search pictures
attached to your article/rubrique.
One possibility if you absolutely want to reuse your files without
duplicating them is to use the "distant file" option (for documents) :
- in /IMG create a directory named "share" and upload your images here
- in the "attach a document" block, click on the triangle to make the
options appear
- indicate the url of you image in the text field under "Reference a
document on the Internet" (ex.
http://mysite.spip/IMG/share/my-beautifull-picture.jpg)
- valid your choice and wait a little (this can take some time)
- you'll obtain a confirmation with a picture number : 123 for
<doc123> and <emb123>
- insert inside you text content <emb123> : that inserts an image that
points to your shared picture's url.
And this should work. (but duplicating is easier imho
)
p.s.: if these /IMG/jpg or /IMG/gif folders are so important, why not
uploading directly into them? (again no re-sizeing)
I think it's for security and to avoid annoying mistakes :)=
