(Replying to own post). This might be it - from the English v1.7 release notes:
"Two additional configuration variables for mes_options.php3: you can now configure whether SPIP will ignore connections by REMOTE_USER (htaccess) and/or HTTP authentication."
Except that I cannot find this file, or even *options*. What is it actually called?
Thanks,
Richard

Subject: [Spip-en] How to use SPIP in a private website?
I want to use SPIP in a private website, currently protected with Basic Authentication only. The problem I have is that SPIP appears to use Basic Authentication also, and this gets muddled with the overall access control - when try to access the ecrire folder, get first the overall challenge, then SPIPs, then the overall challenge, then access denied.
Has anyone used SPIP in this scenario? I don't mind what access control scheme I use, so long as:
- there is protection for the site overall (one shared username/password, as now, or individual logins)
- there is normal SPIP authentication for authors
Any thoughts?
TIA,
Richard
