how to customize spip?

Hello! I am new to spip, please be patient with me while I learn.

1) I've seen that there are theme skeletons available for spip in
French. Are there any in English? What files do I need to edit to
alter the appearance of my spip site, to customize as theme?

2) How do I change things like an article being "par" somebody to "by" a
certain author? How do I change menu items, things like Plan du site, En
résumé at the home page?

Thanks In Advance,

Sotiris Sotiropoulos

Hello Sotiris,

Indeed, presently the skeletons distributed are only in
French, but you can easily adapt them to your needs.

What files do I need to edit to
alter the appearance of my spip site, to customize as
theme?

The distributed skeletons are article-dist.html,
rubrique-dist.html, sommaire-dist.html, plan-dist.html and
some other [skel]-dist.html, all in the root of your site.

The best way is:
a/ to copy all the [skel]-dist.html into [skel].html to
preserve originals
b/ to modify these copies: spip will consider them in
priority if they exist.

2) How do I change things like an article being "par"
somebody to "by" a certain author? How do I change menu
items, things like Plan du site, En résumé at the home
page?

the skeleton of the homepage is sommaire[-dist].html
('sommaire' means 'summary')
look inside for the items you want to translate.
Once a skeleton modified, remeber to click on the "update"
button the will appear on a page we you are logged in.

You can fully customize these skeletons according to your
needs. You will have to learn the SPIP 'langage de boucles'
(loops' language) Translation in progress at: spip.net

It appears as if the "email a friend" functionality is not working for
my installation of SPIP. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be
the problem? One thing I should mention is that my email server is not
the same as my ftp server (but would that affect the sendmail program?)

Thanks,

Hello Sotiris,

It appears as if the "email a friend" functionality is not
working for my installation of SPIP.

What do you mean by the "email a friend" functionality?
Do the "news" of the site, or the "lost password"
fucntionnality that send e-mails work?

The php installation needs to be able to communicate with
the smtp deamon of the server to send e-mails withg the php
function email().
If they don't, it means that php must be reconfigurated on
the server where you run spip.

regards,

daniel

I suppose you are talking of the additional module "envoyer à un ami"
but I do not really understand what precisely might be your problem.

Please give some additional info about what you did so we might find
the reason for your problem.

Klaus.
